SOBER MINDS

A FAITH-BASED INTRO TO MENTAL HEALTH

Anxiety. Depression. ADHD. Suicide. Panic Attacks. Triggers. Trauma.

I'm sure you've heard at least one of these words every week for a while; especially since 2020's COVID-19 pandemic that many experts claim as the start of (at least a big contributor to) today's "mental health crisis." Does the Church have a responsibilty to help those struggling mentally? If so, how? Will a purely Biblical approach cut it? Will a purely clinical one?

“Every scientific [and clinical] statement in the long run, however complicated it looks, really means something like, 'I pointed the telescope to such and such a part of the sky at 2:20 a.m. on January 15th and saw so-and-so,' or, 'I put some of this stuff in a pot and heated it to such-and-such a temperature and it did so-and-so.’

Do not think I am saying anything against science: I am only saying what its job is. And the more scientific a man is, the more (I believe) he would agree with me that this is the job of science — and a very useful and necessary job it is too. But why anything comes to be there at all, and whether there is anything behind the things science observes - something of a different kind — this is not a scientific question.”

- C.S. Lewis, Mere Christianity

At the very least, we know God calls us to be "sober-minded" (1 Peter 5:8); contextually, this is not calling us to simply abstain from wine, but rather remain watchful, calm, collected, and temperate (rather than dominated by fear, anger, and sadness). These are not attributes our society readily promotes, but they are ones that aid us in fulfilling the great commandments (Love God, love others; Mat 22:36-40) and the great commission (making disciples of Jesus Christ; Mat 28:16-20).

In this 8-hour series (offered pre-recorded or in-person), group members will learn:

  • To define "mental health."

  • About "holistic health" and the church's opportunity to provide it.

  • About our "five" emotions and God's amazing plan for each of them.

  • A clinical, biblical, and practical approach to Anxiety, Depression, and ADHD.

  • About faith-based mindfulness.

  • How to listen to our bodies in a God-ordained way.

  • The importance of externalizing our struggles to each other.

  • How to set boundaries for our health and the health of our relationships.
